‘I’m just helping, Ma,’ said Asta.

‘Get out of me way.’ Ma ushered her from the bar. ‘I have all the help I want.’ She motioned at Kitty and Finn, ferrying loaded trays.

‘Ma, they’re underage,’ hissed Asta. ‘You could lose your licence.’

‘That man Kitty’s serving,’ said Ma, ‘is our Chief Superintendent. I know a thing or two about him.’ She lifted her nose. ‘He won’t be enforcing any auld laws in here, darlin’.’

Impressed by this mafioso streak in her mother, Asta retired upstairs to collate her notes and email Conan.
